Overview

The White is pleased to present "Reduction / Outline / Interpretation", an exhibition of new works by Ikuhisa Sawada. Sawada has previously presented works such as his representative work "closed circuit". He attempts to discover how we see things through the use of photography.
Sawada's new series "Reduction / Outline / Interpretation" uses old compact digital cameras. Some images will allow us to recognise or anticipate what is captured or the situation even with a rough image. This suggests that we complement our images with knowledge and build up our photographs.
Sawada's images ask us to what extent a photograph can be a photograph and what makes a photograph a photograph, when the information about the subject is reduced from the photograph.

Statement

When I take photographs, I do not need information on the subject - the name or role of the object in the photograph - but only respond to the line, surface and colour. In other words, the objects I photograph are not the things themselves but the relationships between them.
If I use the lines, surfaces and colours derived from the relationships between objects to create my images. The objects that are clearly expressed and evoke meaning will themselves become noise. Suppose concrete objects are discarded and reduced to lines, surfaces and colours. In that case, illusions and stories are eliminated. The landscape appears as a pure structure left to visual interpretation alone.
One would expect the image to be reduced to what is purely visible on the surface, dispelling perception through knowledge. Still, an unresolved photograph would invite decipherment through knowledge. And the image would be supplemented. However, I expect that the relationship between photograph and object will then cease to be equal, thereby liberating the photograph from the object.

Biography

Ikuhisa Sawada (1970)Photographer. Participated in the Osamu Kanemura workshop and ran "The Gallery" from 2012 to 2013 and the alternative space "The White" since 2014.
Sawada uses the recording and mechanical properties of the camera to discover new ways of looking at things that are unrecognised by everyday vision. In "closed circuit," he has been working continuously since 2011. He makes large prints of photographs taken in public places (train stations) familiar to many people. He displays them in a layered manner in the exhibition space. As viewers walked among the photographs, the images interfered with each other. The artist attempted to create a new landscape through the deconstruction and reconstruction of relationships.
Significant exhibitions include αM Project 2017 "Mirrors and Holes - Photography into Sculpture." vol. 2 (curator: Yuri Mitsuda / 2017 / αM / Tokyo), "space/guide/volume" (2021 / CAVE-AYUMIGALLERY / Tokyo), and a year-long series of monthly exhibitions "closed circuit, monthly vol.1- vol12」(The Gallery / Tokyo). In 2021, he participated in "Biennale de l'image tangibles" in Paris.
In 2017, his photo book "closed circuit" was published by his label, and in 2018, "substance" was published by RONDADE.
